All it took for New York Yankees pitcher Carlos Carrasco to reach the big leagues again were his teammates allowing nearly 20 runs in a nationally televised blowout loss.
Either way, we figure he'll take it.
The Yankees recalled Carrasco, 38, from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers followed up Friday's thrilling clash with an 18-2 rout of the Yankees on Saturday night.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone's curious bullpen management paved a return path for Carrasco, who posted a 5.91 ERA and -0.3 bWAR across 32 innings before being designated for assignment last month. Carrasco subsequently allowed seven runs over 6.1 minor-league innings.
Carrasco is 8-20 with a 6.14 ERA and -2.9 bWAR over the last three years.
Beggars can't be choosers, however, and the Yankees desperately needed a fresh arm. Starting pitcher Will Warren allowed seven runs on Saturday, and Boone used seven pitchers, including backup infielder Pablo Reyes, to record the final 20 outs.
Things were so bad that Boone even sent out Luke Weaver and setup man Devin Williams, though the two only threw a combined 20 pitches.
Veteran lefty Ryan Yarbrough starts for the Yankees on Sunday night, hoping to keep Carrasco—and every other reliever—from hitting the mound too early. Yarbrough went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 19-5 K-BB ratio over four starts and 20 innings in May.
