Yankees Make Spencer Jones Announcement Amid Spring Training

The New York Yankees feature one of the most talented rosters in baseball, strong from top to bottom after the front office re‑signed both Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger in free agency.

However, those moves have created a difficult situation for several MLB‑ready young outfielders who no longer have a clear path to playing time. The most notable is Spencer Jones, who has yet to make his big‑league debut despite performing at a level that would normally earn an opportunity.

Last year, the 24‑year‑old left‑handed slugger spent most of the season at Triple‑A, owning a .274 batting average, .342 on‑base percentage, .897 OPS, 19 home runs and 48 RBIs across 67 games.

But with the Yankees committed to giving Jasson Dominguez regular at‑bats, the club now has three left‑handed outfielders competing for two spots, with Aaron Judge locked into right field every day.

Jones has still continued to make his case this spring to make the 40-man roster. Through six Grapefruit League games, he has already hit three home runs with six RBIs, along with a walk and a stolen base. His early production has only strengthened the argument that he deserves a real look.

On Thursday, the Yankees announced their roster for the upcoming Spring Breakout showcase, and Jones was included among the headliners. New York's match for the event will be on March 21 against the Atlanta Braves.

The game features each organization’s top prospects, and his placement reinforces how highly the Yankees still value him internally despite the crowded outfield picture.

Jones remains one of the most intriguing young players in the system, and how the Yankees handle his development could become one of the defining roster decisions of their season.

The Yankees selected Jones in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt University. With Dominguez still struggling to establish himself at the big‑league level, Jones could earn a call‑up and perhaps an extended look if one of New York’s outfielders spends time on the injured list.

Jones could also take over designated hitter if Giancarlo Stanton goes down, yet New York likely would want him in the outfield thanks to his above‑average defense.

Either way, Jones is positioned to be the next man up, assuming he is not moved in a trade, as his name has been floated as a potential chip for starting pitching. His continued rise gives the Yankees a valuable insurance option as they navigate a long season with championship expectations.
