Yankees Make Swift Decision on Collapsing Prospect

The New York Yankees head into a high-stakes weekend series against the Boston Red Sox with a quiet but telling roster adjustment in their farm system.

The clubs sit two games apart in the race for the American League’s top Wild Card berth, so every available arm matters. Yet on the eve of the first pitch, the organization optioned right-hander Harrison Cohen from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre back to Double-A Somerset.

Cohen had only just arrived at the higher level earlier this month. In two outings totaling 4.1 innings he allowed a single earned run and struck out five.

Those modest numbers were not enough to keep him there. The 6-foot pitcher, who turns 28 later this year, now returns to the Patriots to continue working through a difficult 2026 campaign.

This season has been a clear step backward from the year before.

In 2025, Cohen posted a 3-2 record and a sparkling 1.76 ERA across 49 appearances split between Somerset and Scranton. This year the results have been far less kind. At Double-A he has a 6.56 ERA in 22 games with 27 strikeouts.

His brief Triple-A stints have been even rougher, producing a 7.52 ERA and 25 punch-outs. Those figures explain why the Yankees decided a return to Somerset offered the better environment for him to recapture command and confidence.

Cohen has been in the organization since signing a minor-league contract in August 2022. Over 141 professional games he owns a 17-7 record, a 3.58 ERA and 207 strikeouts.

Those career numbers show a pitcher who has succeeded at times and still possesses the stuff to climb the ladder. What he has not yet done is appear in a major-league game. At 27 he remains a prospect in search of his first big-league opportunity.

Sending him down now does not close the door. If Cohen can lower his ERA and miss more bats over the final weeks at Somerset, another promotion to Triple-A before the season ends would not surprise anyone inside the organization.

For a club chasing October baseball, every arm that can be sharpened is worth the extra development time.

Cohen’s next chapter begins immediately in Double-A, where he will try to turn a disappointing year into a late surge that keeps his name in the conversation.
