Yankees make troubling Jasson Domínguez announcement

New York Yankees fans should have been nervous the second that manager Aaron Boone said he wasn't concerned about Jasson Domínguez's thumb injury.

Nervousness might be turning into panicking, as the Yankees' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians lacks the talented young outfielder. Domínguez suffered a left thumb contusion stealing second base in Sunday's 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Domínguez did not play against the Guardians on Tuesday. Cody Bellinger shifted over to left field, and Trent Grisham took over in center field.

Boone is repeating that outfield alignment on Wednesday night.

Domínguez has endured an inconsistent first full season, hitting .247 with six homers, 25 RBI and a .765 OPS over 191 plate appearances. Three of those six home runs came in a road victory over the Athletics last month.

Boone said the Yankees consider Domínguez to be day-to-day. It remains unclear if the Yankees would consider an injured list stint ahead of this weekend's series against the Boston Red Sox.

Regardless, the Yankees are playing short-handed, and they're in deep trouble if another outfielder gets hurt. Utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera is likely out for the season with a severe ankle injury, and Giancarlo Stanton remains on the injured list.

Although Jazz Chisholm Jr. played the outfield while with the Miami Marlins, he's typically only played second and third since joining the Yankees last summer. Chisholm started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a home run in his first game off the IL.
