Yankees Make Yet Another George Lombard Jr. Change

The New York Yankees are making a subtle but noticeable adjustment to their lineup as they continue their series against the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend.

On Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, manager Aaron Boone and the coaching staff have shifted 21-year-old rookie George Lombard Jr. down a spot in the batting order after a mixed performance the night before.

Friday’s contest saw the Yankees take a 3-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Lombard Jr., who occupied the fifth spot in the order, managed one hit but also struck out three times.

While the young shortstop has shown flashes of promise since making his major league debut earlier this month, the strikeouts highlighted an area where the club may want him to settle in with a bit less pressure near the middle of the lineup.

Saturday’s batting order reflects that thinking. Trent Grisham will lead off in center field, followed by Ben Rice as the designated hitter, Heliot Ramos in left, Luis Garcia at first base, and Spencer Jones in right field. Lombard Jr. slots in sixth at shortstop, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second, Austin Wells behind the plate, and Jose Caballero manning third.

The move drops the highly regarded prospect one place from where he hit Friday, placing him behind a group of more established or currently hotter bats.

Through 15 games, Lombard Jr. has put together a solid start to his big-league career. He is hitting .288 with 15 hits, two home runs, five runs batted in, nine runs scored, and one stolen base.

Those numbers suggest a player who is adjusting well to major league pitching, yet the Yankees appear willing to experiment with his placement as they navigate a competitive stretch of the season.

The Blue Jays series offers an immediate chance to evaluate the change. With the clubs already familiar with each other from recent matchups, the second game of the set will give Lombard Jr. another opportunity to contribute while facing a lineup that has challenged New York at times.

Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see whether the lower spot helps the rookie relax and produce more consistently or whether further adjustments may follow in the days ahead.

At just 21 years old and still early in his first major league campaign, Lombard Jr. remains a long-term piece of the Yankees’ future. Moving him around the order is a common managerial tactic when evaluating young talent under the bright lights of the Bronx.

Saturday’s game will provide the next data point in that ongoing process as the Yankees look to build on Friday’s win and keep pace in the American League East race.
