Yankees making Anthony Volpe trade makes too much sense

Volpe made his big league debut in 2023 after a couple of years of being a top prospect. Fans were hopeful he’d be the next great shortstop in New York. Following in Derek Jeter’s footsteps was never going to be a simple task, though.

Volpe now has enough of a sample size to confidently assume that things are not working out in New York for him. He is hitting .224/.288/.374 across 2,053 total at-bats.

However, it has not all been bad for Volpe. In his rookie season in 2023, the infielder finished eighth in American League Rookie of the Year voting and even won a Gold Glove. Volpe only hit .209 that season, but he did record 21 home runs and 24 stolen bases.

Volpe’s production has dwindled since 2023, both from an offensive and defensive standpoint. He has one home run and is hitting .247 to go along with a .663 OPS across 48 games played this year. Volpe led the league with 19 errors a season ago.

Many Yankees fans have made their feelings clear on social media. They would like New York to commit to a new shortstop. And for Volpe, that would be the best move.

Playing in New York is difficult. It features no shortage of media and fans are not afraid to let players know what they really think. Volpe could realistically break out with a different team. At 25 years old, it is far too early to give up on him as far as his overall MLB success is concerned. For the Yankees, though, trading him is the best option.

Potential Anthony Volpe trade destinations

The Yankees have been linked to catchers such as the Minnesota Twins’ Ryan Jeffers and the Colorado Rockies’ Hunter Goodman. Volpe receiving an opportunity in Minnesota with the Twins would be intriguing, but his offensive performance would surely see drastic improvement in Colorado with the Rockies.

Of course, New York has also been mentioned as a possible landing destination for San Diego Padres star Mason Miller. Perhaps Volpe could be included in a deal for the closer.

Regardless of the specific trade, including Volpe in a deal makes too much sense. Will the Yankees actually move Volpe? It remains to be seen, but it is something the team needs to strongly consider.
