The New York Yankees' slow offseason may have gotten much worse.
Brian Cashman has failed to make any big additions, and they may now even lose their own top free agent.
According to ESPN insider Buster Olney, the team is at an impasse with All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger. More than that, they don't think he's going to come back to the Bronx, and have shifted their focus toward other free agents.
"The Yankees were hoping to re-sign the veteran outfielder, who played well for them last season, but are now operating under the assumption that Bellinger is going to sign elsewhere. New York is now seeking additions elsewhere, sources added," Olney wrote.
Per Olney, the Yankees' offer was in the ballpark of five years and at least $30 million a year. It was the second offer they've made him this offseason.
Bellinger, however, is reportedly looking for a longer deal with a higher annual average value. He hit .272 with a .334 OBP and a .480 SLG and 29 home runs last season.
He's a well-known commodity and an above-average defensive player, yet it remains to be seen if someone will be willing to meet his financial aspirations.
Kyle Schwarber just got $150 million over five years and Pete Alonso got $155 million over five years as well.
As for the Yankees, they will probably go all-in on Bo Bichette to appease the fans and get something out of this disappointing offseason.
