While Oswaldo Cabrera continues his recovery from surgery, a few of his New York Yankees teammates made sure his annual youth baseball camp carried on without missing a beat.
Fernando Cruz, J.C. Escarra, and Pablo Reyes showed up early and stayed late, stepping in for their sidelined teammate to keep the tradition alive. It’s yet another sign of how beloved Cabrera is in the Yankees' clubhouse. Hours before they would have to report to the clubhouse for Sunday night’s game, Cruz, Escarra and Reyes were in the Bronx giving kids a chance to meet and learn from a real big league baseball player.
Cabrera suffered a gruesome injury earlier in the week. He fractured his ankle trying to score a run in Seattle. It is a displaced fracture that required surgery. He is likely out for the rest of the season.
Since he just had surgery on Thursday, Cabrera was in no condition to host excited young fans at a baseball camp.
So, his teammates and friends stepped in.
Fernando Cruz, J.C. Escarra and Pablo Reyes joined dozens of kids at the Oswaldo Cabrera Youth Baseball Camp in the Bronx this morning. They showed up to support Oswaldo, who is recovering from surgery, and make sure the kids got to play ball with some Yankees today. Good stuff! pic.twitter.com/MvzckHoj8z

Before his unfortunate injury, Oswaldo Cabrera was getting his first real chance to be a big league starter. He made the majority of the starts at third base and he was making a solid contribution to the Yankees' lineup. Over 34 games, he posted a .243 batting average, with one home run and 11 RBIs, and an OPS of .631 .
