Yankees Predicted To Trade For $66 Million Infielder After Ugly Loss

The Yankees lost their fourth straight game on Monday and were shut out for the second straight night as they fell 1-0 to the lowly Los Angeles Angels in 11 innings.

In what has been deemed one of the worst losses of the Aaron Judge era, the Yankees failed to plate a run in the 9th, 10th, and 11th inning despite having a runner on second and no outs in each of them.

Worse, in the 9th and 10th innings, they needed just one run to win before Jonathan Loaisiga allowed a go-ahead seeing-eye double to Nolan Schanuel.

Amid yet another June Yankees collapse, the trade rumors are once again hot.

ESPN’s Buster Olney linked the Yankees to Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who has a scorching .527 slugging percentage and .834 OPS.

The Yankees’ current fix at third base has been Jazz Chisholm Jr, though he remains out of position. A turning point in Monday’s loss was when second baseman DJ LeMahieu failed to get a bunt down in the 10th to move over Austin Wells.

LeMahieu has been better as of late, but a trade for Suárez would push Chisholm back to second base. That’d allow a natural third baseman to man the hot corner, and it’d mean fewer reps for LeMahieu, who has seen his power evaporate due to continual lower-body injuries.

A possible drawback of this trade is a belief that the Yankees have been too focused on hitting for power and might not need another guy like Suárez, whose .307 on-base percentage is only 13th among qualified third basemen.

The Yankees could benefit instead from targeting prolific contact bats like Brendan Donovan, whose .381 on-base percentage is first among second basemen and ninth in the National League.

If Suárez becomes available, though, his price tag won’t be all that steep, as he’s a free agent after 2025, which means the D’backs would rather get a few mid-level prospects instead of letting him walk for free.
