Stellar pitching has propelled the New York Yankees' red-hot start to the season. The Yanks are 8-3 behind strong performances on the mound.
Now, the rich are about to get richer, as former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole continues to take big steps toward his recovery.
As reported by Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News, Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Cole will take the mound on Sunday for Single-A Hudson Valley.
"Gerrit Cole is scheduled to face hitters in Hudson Valley on Sunday, Aaron Boone said," Phillips shared on X. "No next step for Carlos Rodón has been determined yet. He threw 40 pitches in his bullpen yesterday."
The 35-year-old missed the 2025 season after making just 17 starts in 2024. He's still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but reports have been encouraging.
This is a huge step on his way back to the majors, and while the Yankees will obviously err on the side of caution with their ace, it shouldn't be long before they recall him if he doesn't experience any discomfort or goes through setbacks.
Cole has made six All-Stars teams and won one Cy Young award. He joined the Yankees on a nine-year, $324 million contract in 2020. He boasts a 3.12 ERA with 915 strikeouts and 185 walks with the Yankees.
He led the league in WAR (7.4), win-loss percentage (.789), ERA (2.63), starts (33), shutouts (two) and innings (209.0) in 2023, his best season in the Bronx.
In the meantime, the Yankees will continue to roll with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Ryan Weathers and Will Warren while their superstar gets back to full strength.
