Yankees’ Ryan McMahon walks off Braves in extra innings

Ryan McMahon came to the rescue for the New York Yankees in their 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves in extra innings on Friday night.

McMahon is going through the 10th season of his career in the majors, his second with the Yankees. He has been a reliable starter for the squad, often making plays that don’t garner a lot of attention but surely leaves a positive impact on the game.

This time, however, saw McMahon shine with the spotlight. New York was even with Atlanta at two runs apiece, taking the game to extra innings. The Braves failed to score in the top of the frame, paving the way for the hosts to win it with a walk off.

Cue in McMahon’s moment. He delivered a sac fly to right field, presenting the chance for Luis Garcia Jr. to reach home plate and score the game-winning run for the Yankees.

How Ryan McMahon, Yankees played against Braves

Ryan McMahon became the hero of the night. He ended up making the biggest play of the game in the Yankees’ win over the Braves to begin this weekend’s series.

Both offenses were relatively silent throughout the game, not getting a run in the first seven innings. Atlanta finally got on the board with two runs in the eighth frame, but New York fired back with the last three scores of the game to secure the win.

Max Fried started on the mound as he lasted 6.1 innings, striking out seven batters while conceding three hits. David Bednar wound up getting the win as the final pitcher from the team’s bullpen for this game.

New York improved to a 65-51 record on the season, holding the second spot in the AL East Division standings. They are above the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles while trailing the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees will look forward to Game 2 of their series against the Braves. That contest takes place on Aug. 8 at 3:05 p.m. ET.
