Thankfully for the New York Yankees, All-Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has avoided injury since joining the Bronx Bombers last summer.
That potentially changed Tuesday night, when Chisholm left the Yankees’ 15-3 blowout win over the Baltimore Orioles with an oblique problem. Chisholm hurt himself on a first-inning foul ball, stayed in the game, and then reached third on a double and error.
The Yankees immediately replaced Chisholm with backup infielder Oswald Peraza, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Chisholm and Yankees manager Aaron Boone evidently agree to disagree on the slugger’s status. Boone expressed concern and said Chisholm will have an MRI on Thursday in New York; it is unclear why Chisholm is not undergoing testing Wednesday in Baltimore.

Chisholm, on the other hand, told Boone that he’s “fine.” The veteran second baseman also stayed upbeat when speaking with reporters after the game.
“I’ve torn my oblique before, so I know it’s not like torn or anything,” Chisholm said.
“I can cough without any pain or anything like that,” he added, according to the Yankees’ official website. “It’s just to be cautious and not try to overdo it.”
Chisholm entered Wednesday hitting .181 with seven home runs, 17 RBI, and six stolen bases. However, the 27-year-old leads the American League with 39 strikeouts, and he’s on pace to set career lows in slugging percentage (.410) and OPS (.714) over a full season.
Peraza and Pablo Reyes could see more at-bats if Chisholm heads to the injured list. Additionally, former batting champion DJ LeMahieu is currently on a rehab assignment at Double-A Somerset.
LeMahieu, a four-time Gold Glove winner, has not regularly played second base since 2021.
