Yankees Win Thriller Despite Devin Williams' Best Choking Attempt

The Yankees’ win over the Tampa Bay Rays had a bit of everything: spectacular plays in the field, effective starting pitching and clutch hits at the end to bring it home.

There was also Devin Williams

Up one run in the ninth inning, Williams gave up a long two-run homer to Josh Lowe. If not for the lineup bailing him out, the sole focus of the night would have been on the closer’s second blown save of the season.

Only having two blown saves in 19 opportunities is good, but Williams seems to be the classic streaky-reliever. In all of May and June, he only allowed runs in three appearances. In July, he surrendered runs five times.

This comes after Williams was one of the most consistent relievers in all of baseball the last several years for the Milwaukee Brewers. His ERA stayed under 2.00 every year; in 2025, he has spent almost the entire season above 5.00.

It can be tough for a reliever to even out their stats after a few bad outings early in the year. But Williams’ numbers are worse across the board. After months of better play, he is still striking hitters out less, letting them get on base more and even plunking people far more often. It has been the worst season of his career.

Anthony Volpe, Cody Bellinger and Ryan McMahon will get most of the headlines, and deservedly so. They had some of the biggest hits for the Yankees this whole season, up to this point.

But that image of a ball being launched into orbit during the top of the ninth inning stood out. If the Yankees are going to contend, Williams and the backend of the bullpen are going to have nail down games where the lineup hands them leads.

Just a couple of “oopsies” like tonight, and Williams might be the first person fans are ready to send to a new team.
