The procedure was performed by Dr. Paul DiMuzio at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. The team said any further treatment and Wheeler’s recovery timeline are still to be determined. The Phillies remain focused on his health and recovery.
Wheeler has had another strong season for Philadelphia. Through 24 starts, he has posted a 10-5 record with a 2.71 ERA over 149 2/3 innings and 195 strikeouts. His consistent strikeout rate and ability to pitch deep into games have made him a key member of the rotation.
Wheeler had struggled a bit since pitching a complete game on July 6 against the Reds. His August 6 start was delayed two days because of shoulder soreness. Phillies head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit said Wheeler experienced “a little heaviness” in his right shoulder after his last start on Friday.
Off the field, Wheeler has said he plans to retire after his contract expires following the 2027 season to spend more time with his family. The decision shows his focus on personal priorities and highlighting that family and health come first, even for elite athletes.
The Phillies will continue to monitor Wheeler closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.
