Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has shared an emotional statement on social media, following the passing of his famed head coach.

A former undisputed gold holder at 155lbs in the Octagon, Anthony Pettis and his younger brother Sergio Pettis were guided to championship gold in both the UFC and Bellator MMA, respectively, by former kickboxing star Duke Roufus.

Boasting an impressive roster of talent at his Roufusport gym in Milwaukee, the iconic trainer tragically passed away in his sleep at 55 years of age, according to his facility’s business partner.

Releasing a gut-wrenching statement, lightweight veteran Pettis addressed the tragic death.

Anthony Pettis describes Duke Roufus as his adopted father

Just one of a handful of names to ply their trade at Roufousport, former UFC lightweight titleholder Pettis is likely one of the more high-profile mixed martial arts stars to represent the facility.

Furthermore, the late Roufus also trained the likes of another former UFC welterweight champion in the form of Tyron Woodley, as well as pro-wrestler-turned-fighter CM Punk, and former welterweight star Ben Askren.

Posting an emotional statement on social media, former kingpin Pettis described Roufus as his “father”, following the passing of his biological father.

“When my dad was killed, you took me in and became my father,” Pettis said of Roufus on social media, accompanied by a picture of the duo.

“Together we did the impossible and made it to the top! I will always make you proud; you’ve taught me so much. I will make sure your legacy continues on. #RIP, coach.”

Duke Roufus’ championship products

Competing in professional kickboxing himself until his 2008 retirement from combat sports, Roufus produced an official 36-8-1 record in the sport.

And eventually going on to open the Roufusport facility in Wisconsin, the late Milwaukee native laid claim to a vast array of championship victors from his own gym.

Both Anthony Pettis and Sergio Pettis produced title wins in the UFC and Bellator, respectively, while the above-mentioned Woodley struck gold at the welterweight limit in the Octagon.

On top of that, former strawweight star Rose Namajunas previously trained at the facility, while Askren managed to scoop spoils in both Bellator MMA and ONE Championship before his move to the UFC.
