UFC pioneer Art “One Glove” Jimmerson died Wednesday at age 60, according to his daughter.

Jimmerson fought at UFC 1 as boxing’s representative. He’d been a successful pro boxer in three different divisions and represented his discipline at UFC 1 on Nov. 12, 1993. He famously wore only one glove into the cage, believing he could jab with that hand and use his power hand, his right, to knock out opponents. Unfortunately for Jimmerson that never happened. He was matched up against future MMA legend Royce Gracie, who ended up as the winner of UFC 1. Gracie took One Glove down before he was able to land a punch and made him tap out. That was the first submission in UFC history.

In later years, Jimmerson trained fighters, ranging from pros to beginners, in the Los Angeles area.

Iconic former UFC ref John McCarthy left a message on his X account about Jimmerson.

“It’s with a heavy heart I say goodbye to Art Jimmerson. Art was a wonderful person who for a short time was tormented by his time at UFC 1, but eventually he realized he was part of something special and that he was a huge part of the history of MMA. Art had a great sense of humor and often showed up to an event wearing 1 huge boxing glove. May God Bless you and care for Art. Your name and the memory of you will live on in the sport of MMA forever.”
