During his UFC career, Brendan Schaub faced off with some legends of the heavyweight division.
While he called time on his career in 2015 after coming to terms with where his ceiling was in the sport, ‘Big Brown’ still recorded some big wins.
Schaub famously beat the likes of Mirko Cro Cop and Gabriel Gonzaga, having also suffered losses to heavyweight icons like Andrei Arlovski and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
However, there was one fight that looked likely to happen that would have seen him take on a new arrival to the promotion who would go on to become an all-time fan favorite.
While Schaub has named a current heavyweight he’d want to face in a hypothetical return, he nearly crossed paths with a star who is still one of the top names in the division to this day.
In a recent appearance on the Jaxxon Podcast, Brendan Schaub spoke about how the landscape of the UFC has changed in regards to how big the fighters are.
After Schaub said that he probably wouldn’t be able to compete in today’s heavyweight division because he’d be undersized, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson questioned whether he ever faced Derrick Lewis.
By the time that Schaub competed for the last time in 2014, Lewis had only had his first three fights inside the Octagon, winning the first two by knockout before being stopped by Matt Mitrione.
Now with 30 UFC fights under his belt and the record for the most knockouts at 16, ‘The Black Beast’ is still going strong at 40 years old, as Lewis’ recent win over Tallison Teixeira proved.
Schaub joked that even back then, he knew a fight with Lewis wasn’t something that he wanted a part of, claiming that it immediately killed his celebratory vibe following a recent win.
“No, we were supposed to. He knocked somebody out and then I just beat Lavar Johnson. I was watching at Buffalo Wild Wings, I was there doing a UFC signing. He knocked some dude out and they’re like, ‘Who do you want to fight next?’ He’s like, ‘Brendan Schaub’.
“It ruined my night. You know when you’re like chilling, relaxing, I was like a few beers deep… I’m like, ‘F—, there goes my night. No more wings.’ F—– my whole night up.”
In an appearance on Brendan Schaub’s ‘The Fighter and The Kid’ podcast, Jorge Masvidal tried to tempt the former UFC heavyweight out of retirement.
Masvidal was looking to get Schaub involved in his Gamebred Bareknuckle promotion, which has previously featured several former stars of the heavyweight division.
Lewis’ name came into the conversation, with Masvidal suggesting that he could be a free agent signing that they were looking into.

At the time, Schaub stated that he would be open to the matchup considering that he could grapple, though nothing ever came of this and ‘The Black Beast’ remains in the UFC to this day.
