Charles Oliveira remains focused on reclaiming the undisputed lightweight title, despite recent criticism of his fighting style.
In March, ‘Do Bronx’ made a strong case for himself by dominating Max Holloway to claim the BMF title. But even though he walked away with the belt, not everyone was impressed. Many fans and fighters criticised the fight for spending too much time on the ground.
But even with that feedback hanging over him, Oliveira did exactly what he needed to do to get his second straight win since being knocked out by Ilia Topuria last June.
This coming June, the UFC White House event is scheduled to take over the combat sports world, with Topuria looking to unify the lightweight title against Justin Gaethje in the main event.
Arman Tsarukyan, who holds the top spot in the division, has already said he plans to stay ready and close to fight weight in case he’s needed as a late replacement.
But ‘Do Bronx’ has thrown his hat into the ring too. He’s told the UFC that if he isn’t needed as a backup, they should guarantee him a bout with Topuria. His concern is that Topuria might move up to 170 pounds before they get a chance to meet.
Speaking to Canal Encarada, Oliveira said: “I’m going after the title. I want to become champion again, but I think nobody is naive.”
“Everyone is doing their math. The belt will be unified in June. I could be backup for that fight,” he added. “But it sucks sometimes because I stay focused on training and making weight.”
If Makhachev does beat Gaethje like many expect him to, most people think he’ll move up a division and take on Islam Makhachev at welterweight.
The Brazilian star also mentioned interest in a potential matchup with Nate Diaz as their ongoing feud continues.
