Conor McGregor's legal troubles continue to pile up. If his woes weren't bad enough already, the UFC star now faces the possibility of a 10-year jail sentence for alleged perjury.
'The Notorious' has endured a trying time away from competition, constantly finding himself tangled in unwanted situations amid his lengthy stay on the sidelines. Injury has forced the 36-year-old out of his beloved sport, and with a four-year stint away from the octagon under his belt, the problems away from fighting have started to multiply.
In late 2024, Conor McGregor was found liable for sexually assaulting Nikita Hand from their meeting in 2018. McGregor began feeling the fallout of the verdict in the following weeks, but all went quiet with the lawsuit until now.
Facing potential perjury charges, McGregor could be lashed with a decade sentence behind bars after the case was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The alleged charge in question came when the sportsman and his legal team decided to drop their prior allegation that blamed Nikita Hand's partner for assaulting her.
Two of Hand's former neighbors, Steven Cummins and Samantha O'Reilly, both sided with Conor McGregor's earlier claims that her partner physically abused Hand. The neighbors signed sworn statements insisting they were witnesses to the assault seven years ago on the day she returned home following her experience with McGregor.
After the allegations were dropped against Nikita Hand's partner, Hand's legal team took action.
If Conor McGregor is found guilty of his perjury offense, he could face a maximum penalty of either a 10-year jail sentence or a $117,000 fine.
McGregor has been attempting to put this legal matter behind him and push forward with a return to the UFC after his aforementioned four-year layoff. However, that rumored comeback looks progressively unlikely each time McGregor makes his way into the news.
