Conor McGregor says he’s going after Islam Makhachev to become UFC’s first triple champion

Conor McGregor has let Islam Makhachev know he’s coming for his title, aiming to become the first fighter in UFC history to win belts in three weight classes.

McGregor made headlines back in 2016 when he became the first fighter to hold two UFC titles at the same time, following his win over Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden. Now, years later, Makhachev has matched that feat by securing a second title at welterweight after defeating Jack Della Maddalena.

“I’m coming for that triple crown. You can be damn sure of it,” McGregor said on social media. “He did well against Della, tough fight but got the job done and fair play to him.”

The rivalry between McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov is well-known and it has involved their fans too. Still, despite all the tension over the years, McGregor says his focus is now on the belt itself rather than any personal grudge.

Conor McGregor says Islam Makhachev is in his sights as he chases UFC history

Conor McGregor is expected to step back into the octagon at the UFC White House event this summer, almost five years after his last appearance. While he hasn’t picked up a win since January 2020, he still has his sights set on another shot at a world title.

If chasing that title means reigniting his long-running feud with Islam Makhachev, so be it. Speaking exclusively to Bloody Elbow, McGregor made it clear he’s focused on returning with a win before making a push for a third championship.

“I’m motivated,” McGregor said while pouring pints at The Black Forge Inn in Dublin following a meeting with Mike Tyson. “I’m self-motivated and I for sure want a crack at that belt. I for sure want a crack at that 170-pound belt to go for the triple crown.”

He also took the chance to praise Makhachev for stepping up in weight, something Khabib Nurmagomedov never did during his career.

“It was a good performance out of him and fair play to him,” McGregor noted, before taking another jab at Nurmagomedov by pointing out that Makhachev “had the courage to do it, to go up.” He added: “So yeah, I’m excited for it. Let’s see what happens. Let’s get back in the mix.”
