Conor McGregor took to social media to launch an impassioned defence of Ilia Topuria against one of boxing’s biggest names.
Pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford mocked Topuria for quitting on his stool after four rounds of his lightweight title fight with Justin Gaethje on the White House lawn on Saturday night. The Georgian-born Spaniard had previously claimed he could beat any top boxer, including the undefeated ‘Bud’.
And after Crawford took to social media to make fun of Topuria’s defeat, the former champion had a surprising defender in his long-time rival McGregor. The Irishman was far from impressed with the performance, but was more angry with a boxer slagging a fellow MMA fighter.
After watching the often cocky Ilia Topuria’s fall from grace, fighters across the disciplines were lining up for a chance to take a shot. Arman Tsarukyan, Jake Paul and others – including Conor McGregor – were far from complimentary as he retired on his stool after four rounds.
But the biggest name to mock the two-division champion was boxing great Terence Crawford, who retired last year as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. “This the guy that said he would knock me out and whoop me and Shakur at the same time?” He wrote on X.
This clearly struck a nerve with Conor McGregor, who was watching from home as a host of big-name boxers were flaunted at cageside.
“What the f— are you saying?” McGregor tweeted. “You can wrestle yet you are afraid of an MMA fight. That to me is pitiful. The kid was beaten in an MMA fight, of which you don’t have the courage for. What the f— was with all these little boxers at this show yet no MMA fighters? #TheseBoysAintManEnough.”
