Kelvin Gastelum returned to the win column at Noche UFC, but not everyone was convinced it was a step forward for his career.

He missed weight by five pounds ahead of his middleweight bout against Dustin Stoltzfus, which led many to call for the UFC to cut him.

Known for delivering exciting fights in the Octagon, the former title challenger’s career has nonetheless been plagued by similar issues.

Still, Gastelum managed a unanimous decision win over Stoltzfus in San Antonio.

Reflecting on the card, Cormier questioned what’s next for Gastelum following another rough week.

Daniel Cormier shared his thoughts on the Noche UFC event from inside the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, discussing each fight and giving his take on the main talking points.

When he got to Gastelum, DC did not hold back in raising concerns about how to view the win, given the significant weight missed.

“Guys, I’ve got to be honest with you. Kelvin Gastelum I respect greatly because of what he has done in his career. But, I’ve got to be honest, man. Missing weight by that much, I don’t know. I don’t know how to judge these performances.”

Cormier mentioned there were discussions about whether Gastelum should have been given time on the mic after the fight. The post-fight interview gave Gastelum a chance to apologise.

But even with the apology, Cormier questioned whether he deserved that platform so soon after a win that came with such a big miss on the scales.

“It’s unfair man and I don’t know how to judge Gastelum. Honestly, it was so bad guys that we thought about not doing the interview because you should feel something negatively whenever you don’t make the weight or you show up like that. I get it, he took the fight on four weeks notice but that’s a month to get ready.”

Daniel Cormier pointed out another time Kelvin Gastelum missed weight

Gastelum mentioned the short-notice nature of this fight during his post-fight interview, but it is not the first time he has had issues with making weight.

Cormier brought up his fight against Daniel Rodriguez last year in Saudi Arabia, which was moved to middleweight after Gastelum could not make the welterweight limit.

The fight’s entertainment value may have helped Gastelum stay on the roster for now, but even that might not be enough after another weight miss.
