The UFC legend doesn’t see any way the Netflix MMA card tops the UFC White House event.
After months of rumours and leaks, UFC finally revealed the full card for their upcoming White House event earlier this month.
The six-fight lineup, headlined by Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje and featuring Alex Pereira in the co-main event for the interim heavyweight title, didn’t exactly get fans excited.
But fans still have plenty to look forward to. On May 16, Netflix will host its first ever MMA event with Ronda Rousey facing Gina Carano in the main event.
Nate Diaz and Francis Ngannou are also set to fight on the Netflix card, adding even more star power.
That now means that three of the five biggest stars in the sport will be competing on a non-UFC event, which is quite a substantial milestone in the sport.
With all of these names attached to the Netflix show, there’s been growing talk among fans that it could rival the UFC White House event.
Cormier made his stance clear in a recent video posted to his YouTube channel.
Perry hasn’t fought under MMA rules since 2021, while Diaz’s last appearance came in 2022 when he beat Tony Ferguson. Even so, Cormier was still looking forward to it.
Cormier said: “The best fighters are in the UFC, make no mistake about that. But why would that excite me? Because of the names and because you know what it’s going to bring.”
“You can have fights and you can have matchups that are great on paper but (they might not deliver).”
Cormier added: “Competition is a good thing… I’m excited, I’m actually excited.”
“But for people comparing it to the White House card, no chance guys. Come on. The White House card is the best card of the year for sure.”
Still, while Cormier doesn’t see them as equals from a fighting perspective, Netflix’s massive reach could pull more attention than ever before – which isn’t something UFC will be able to ignore for long.
