An all-time UFC great wants to see Israel Adesanya call it quits.
Demetrious Johnson had a front-row seat to ‘The Last Stylebender’s’ first fight in over a year last Saturday at UFC Seattle.
Like the legendary middleweight’s fans, ‘Mighty Mouse’ was left disappointed after seeing Adesanya knocked out by Joe Pyfer in round two of the main event at the Climate Pledge Arena.
The 36-year-old’s future has been the talk of the town since then, and ‘Mighty Mouse’ has now revealed his stance on the matter.
In Adesanya’s first statement after the UFC Seattle defeat, he reiterated the pledge to keep fighting that he made moments after the setback inside the Octagon.
The Nigerian-New Zealander continues to push back on retirement talk despite his losing skid. Before being stopped by ‘Bodybagz’, Adesanya was knocked out by Nassourdine Imavov, submitted by Dricus du Plessis, and outpointed by Sean Strickland.
With that winless run in mind, Bloody Elbow readers assessed Adesanya’s future on TalkingPoints. The majority advised retirement, and they aren’t the only ones who think time is up for the ex-champ.
“Dog, you don’t need to f—ing fight,” Demetrious Johnson said during a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show.
“I would (retire) if I was him. I think he’s done everything, there’s nothing else for him to do. The man’s been on a tear, on a grind. I think he deserves to relax and enjoy himself and find something else,” he added.
Johnson was in attendance at UFC Seattle. He was invited by the promotion for his UFC Hall of Fame induction announcement during the broadcast.
‘Mighty Mouse’ retired on top after back-to-back ONE Championship wins over Adriano Moraes. He has continued to reject talk of a comeback, including for Netflix’s very first MMA event this May.
Unlike how the flyweight GOAT exited the sport, Adesanya’s losing skid is beginning to draw comparisons to the back end of Anderson Silva’s career.
