The Chicago crowd at UFC 319 witnessed something truly rare back-to-back spinning back elbow knockouts on the main card. In the third bout of the evening, Carlos Prates floored Geoff Neal with a spinning back elbow at the buzzer of Round 1, earning the ninth such finish in UFC history. Neal lay motionless as Prates celebrated, notching his UFC-best fifth KO since the start of 2024. The Brazilian didn’t waste time calling for a birthday bonus and a fight with Leon Edwards in Rio de Janeiro this October

“I’m feeling amazing. Tomorrow will be my birthday, please give me a fight in Brazil. $50K bonus, let’s go, let’s party. I think the co-main event in Rio should be Carlos Prates vs. Leon Edwards. The time is now.” Shockingly, UFC CEO Dana White granted both requests on the spot.
Just one fight later, Lerone Murphy provided déjà vu, welcoming Aaron Pico to the UFC with another spinning back elbow KO. This marked the 10th in company history. The win improved Murphy’s record to 17-0-1 and kept his undefeated streak alive. Taking the fight on short notice, Murphy capitalized in a massive way, immediately calling for a title shot against featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski who wasted no time in accepting via social media.
“This sport’s all about moments, and I just created one,” Murphy said in his post-fight interview. “I needed something like this. I’m next in line. Let’s go Alexander Volkanovski.”
What could have been Prates’ night alone quickly became one of the most memorable back-to-back knockout sequences in UFC history, further electrifying an already stacked card.
