Dricus du Plessis does not see similarities between how Charles Oliveira and Khamzat Chimaev won their titles.
The Brazilian fan favorite added the BMF title to his résumé last Saturday at UFC 326. Oliveira beat Max Holloway in the main event to exact revenge on his 2015 loss to ‘Blessed’.
But the manner with which ‘Do Bronx’ captured the symbolic belt has split opinion, with many suggesting Oliveira killed the BMF title with a performance that saw him accumulate over 20 minutes of control time.
With that statistic in mind, some have been likening it to how Khamzat Chimaev became middleweight king last August.
Oliveira is not the first big name to come under fire for his approach to a numbered event headliner in recent months.
Before Islam Makhachev faced similar scrutiny at UFC 322, Chimaev comfortably beat Dricus du Plessis with a grappling-heavy display at UFC 319 in Chicago.
With that result in mind, many were surprised to see ‘Borz’ seemingly mock Oliveira’s victory over Holloway after the UFC 326 main event concluded.
Du Plessis noted his rival’s post during an episode of Fight Forecast and suggested that Oliveira did much more on the ground than the undefeated Chechen.
“I saw Khamzat commenting on the fight and saying how boring it was,’ Du Plessis said. “That’s kind of rich coming from him.
“I mean, at least Charles Oliveira went for some submissions, he didn’t just lie on top of him,” he added.
Fans will be expecting more from the middleweight champion when he returns to the Octagon for his first title defense.
Chimaev will be challenged by Sean Strickland in the main event of UFC 328. The card was recently confirmed to be taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on May 9.
