Dustin Poirier believes that Khabib Nurmagomedov is still the greatest lightweight of all time, even having fought Islam Makhachev.

Legendary lightweight contender Poirier was thwarted by both of the Dagestanis in two of his three efforts at undisputed gold throughout his career. He has since retired, and is now a regular part of the UFC broadcast team.

During a recent appearance for Paramount, Poirier was asked to rank his top five lightweights of all time. And he put the elder Nurmagomedov atop the list, with Makhachev a close second after sharing the octagon with both men.

Khabib Nurmagomedov beats Islam Makhachev for top spot on Dustin Poirier’s ranking

Dustin Poirier has listed his five greatest lightweights of all time, in the process giving his take on the great debate between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev. Many argue that the latter leapfrogged his legendary teammate last year when he moved up and became a two-weight champion.

But Poirier believes the dominant ‘Eagle’, who made him tap out in Abu Dhabi after a close encounter, is the best of all time at 155lb. The top three spots were taken up by Nurmagomedov, Makhachev and BJ Penn, before he began to find it tough to pick.

“Ilia? We can put him in there?” Poirier asked before eventually agreeing with the panel of Jorge Masvidal and Chris Weidman that the Georgian can land on the list. “I was thinking in my mind way back, like Jens Pulver, but Frankie [Edgar] for sure, I don’t know how that slipped my mind.
