Movsar Evloev suffered the first loss of his career at UFC 333, stopped by Alexander Volkanovski in the second round of their featherweight title fight in Abu Dhabi.
The Russian challenger entered the Etihad Arena bout undefeated at 20-0, having beaten Diego Lopes, Aljamain Sterling, Arnold Allen and Lerone Murphy on his way to a shot at the belt. Early on, Evloev used his size and strength to muscle the champion against the cage, but Volkanovski found his rhythm as the fight wore on. A clean uppercut in round two set up the finish, with the champion landing ground strikes until the referee waved it off, per MMA Mania.
Shortly after the stoppage, Evloev posted to social media acknowledging the outcome. "Alhamdulillah for everything. Today wasn't my day," he wrote, according to MMA Mania. "Congratulations to Volk. He was the better man today. Thank you to the UFC for giving me the opportunity to fight for the title, and to all my fans."
The one-sided nature of the loss complicates Evloev's path back to title contention. After waiting years for his first championship opportunity, a return bout could take even longer to materialize. MMA Mania suggested a matchup with Youseff Zalal, ranked ninth at featherweight, as a logical next step. Zalal recently snapped an eight-fight win streak with a loss to Sterling and needs a statement win to stay relevant in the division.
Evloev exits his UFC 333 slot at 20-1 overall and 10-1 inside the Octagon. No date has been set for his return.
