Fabian Edwards is now 0-3 in world title fights after losing by knockout on Friday night.
The brother of former UFC champion Leon Edwards fought Costello van Steenis for the middleweight title in the PFL Madrid main event.
Unfortunately for Fabian Edwards, the fight ended with him being knocked out by a series of elbows.
Round one was uneventful, with the most significant damage caused by an accidental head clash that left Costello van Steenis with a cut near his left eye.
The second stanza was much livelier. Edwards surprisingly employed a wrestling game plan, which proved successful for a portion of the five-minute frame.
However, the champion managed to reverse the position and enjoy a period of dominance that most probably earned him a 10-9 round from the cageside judges.
Edwards started round three with a strong striking attack, but he decided to grapple again.
Van Steenis made him pay with a series of elbows that left Edwards out cold on the canvas.
PFL commentator Dan Hardy immediately slammed his compatriot’s ill-advised game plan.
“Crazy. I cannot get my head around that,” the former UFC fighter said.
“He was in a position, landing elbows and knees, and then level changed.
“I cannot get my head around that game plan.
“He wasted so much energy in that second round wrestling. Crazy work!
