Francis Ngannou is heading back to mixed martial arts, and a lot of fans are predicting he’ll put on another punishing display.

The former UFC heavyweight champion hasn’t fought in the sport since October 2024, when he picked up a win over Renan Ferreira in his only appearance for the PFL.

He’s spent more time focusing on boxing recently, but his attention has shifted back to MMA for Netflix’s debut event. Before Ronda Rousey takes on Gina Carano in the main event, Ngannou will face Philipe Lins on May 16.

Ngannou, who holds a record of 17 wins and three losses in MMA, has been a scary figure throughout his career. His ten knockouts before even joining the UFC show just how powerful he is.

Lins won’t have an easy night ahead of him either. The former UFC fighter last fought for Bellator and was released after a loss to Gokhan Saricam at PFL vs Bellator: Champions Series.

When is Francis Ngannou fighting Philipe Lins?

The fight between Francis Ngannou and Philipe Lins will take place on May 16 as part of Netflix’s debut into the sport with NXF 1 from Los Angeles’ Kia Forum. While times haven’t been set yet, American viewers can expect it to take place during typical prime-time hours.

There’s no doubt plenty of fans are eager to see Ngannou back in the sport where he built his reputation. He hasn’t fought an MMA match since his win over Renan Ferreira at PFL vs Bellator 1, though he did fight Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua in boxing during that span.

Ngannou has yet to pick up a win in boxing but hasn’t lost inside the cage since 2018, when Stipe Miocic took a unanimous decision. He came back from that defeat with a series of highlight-reel finishes, including his knockout of Miocic in their rematch to claim the UFC heavyweight title.

A lot of fans expect Lins to suffer the same fate as many before him when they meet at Inglewood’s Intuit Dome. Ngannou is still one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet, and it’s hard to look past him here.

The latest training footage only added to those expectations. The video showed Ngannou throwing some heavy shots at coach Dewey Cooper, who was fully padded up for good reason.

One fan summed up the mood simply: “RIP Lins.”

Another wrote: “Yeah, his opponent is in for a terrible night.”

“His next opponent about to see the pearly gates of heaven,” read one comment, while another added: “Painful just to watch.”

Lins hasn’t fought since leaving the UFC in 2024, despite being on a four-fight win streak at the time. His layoff has been even longer than Ngannou’s.
