Gable Steveson is heading to the UFC, as he will make his Octagon debut at UFC 329 on July 11 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, facing Elisha Ellison on a card already headlined by Conor McGregor.
Steveson arrives with credentials that extend well beyond his 3-0 MMA record. The 25-year-old is one of the most decorated amateur wrestlers of his generation — a two-time NCAA Division I Heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist whose transition to MMA has so far produced exactly the kind of results his background would suggest. All three wins have come by stoppage, and the pace of his development has been rapid enough to warrant a UFC opportunity.
His knockout of Kevin Hein in 24 seconds demonstrated finishing instinct that goes beyond wrestling base alone, and the most recent stoppage of Hugo Lezama in Mexico in February showed he can perform across different environments. Before stepping into the Octagon on July 11, Steveson will also compete at RAF 09 on May 30.
Ellison is not a straightforward opponent despite the record. His 5-2 mark includes a 100 percent finish rate, meaning every professional win has come before the final bell. His UFC debut at UFC Perth last September ended in a knockout loss to heavyweight prospect Brando Pericic inside two minutes — a result that put him on the back foot in the Octagon immediately — but the finishing ability he carries into fights makes him a credible enough test. Based on his prior comments, Gable is ready to deliver.
"Man, I feel amazing. This is going to be the biggest debut on earth and I'm ready. The butterflies, the jitters, it's all part of the game, and I'm ready to take that big step to the UFC and do what I need to do. Man, I think International Fight Week is going to be crazy. You know, maybe a crazy headliner that might come back that you guys might know so, who knows?,” Gable stated
