Undoubtedly, Gilbert Burns, 39, was one of the most respected welterweights of his generation. Meanwhile, Mike Malott stopped him in the third round of their UFC Winnipeg main event. The TKO came at 2:08 and ended his five-fight losing streak. After a few more losses, he would have matched Tony Ferguson’s record. Burns later announced his retirement from the sport, closing out a widely respected career.

Burns did not dress it up or search for excuses. He said he worked hard, fought the best guys in the world, never said no to a fight, and challenged himself every single time. In light of the fact that his wife and his kids were there, he said goodbye from the octagon, signing off his career.

I worked so hard, you know, but I think that’s it, you know, I think I had a great career. I fought so hard, I want to win so bad. But yeah, I think that’s it, you know, I’m not. I think that’s it, you know, I fought the best guys in the world. Number one, pound for pound. A lot of guys are former champions. I never say no to a fight, you know, but I think that’s it. But I’m content, you know, I always try to challenge myself, and I never say no to a fight. I fought everybody, so my wife is here, my baby, my family,” Burns said.

Malott moved to 14-2-1 and solidified his welterweight contender status. Meanwhile, Burns’ 5 losses in a row are the sport communicating something that the competitor inside a fighter is always the last to fully accept.

Burns accepted it in the moments after the stoppage against Malott. Surrounded by his family, he showed a clarity that difficult moments often bring. It was one of the most honest retirement moments the sport has ever seen.

A Glimpse Of Gilbert Burns’ UFC Career

Burns ends his career with 22 wins and 10 losses. More than half his wins came by finish. People should remember what he achieved, not just his last few losses. ‘Durinho’ defeated big names like Jorge Masvidal and Neil Magny. He went five rounds with Kamaru Usman and pushed Khamzat Chimaev hard. He fought top fighters and never quit.

The Brazilian said he is content with his career. He spent his years fighting everyone, never backing down, and reaching the top. When the final bell sounds, content is the right word for what that kind of effort earns. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see what he does next in his career.
