The debate over the “Greatest of All Time” in MMA usually involves names like Jon Jones, Georges St-Pierre, or Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, according to Ben Vickers, the head coach of rising welterweight star Jack Della Maddalena, the conversation might already be over.

In a candid reflection on the current landscape of the UFC, Vickers didn’t hold back his praise for the reigning lightweight king, Islam Makhachev, calling him the “GOAT for a reason.”

Vickers’ assessment comes from firsthand experience. Having watched his pupil rise through the ranks with some of the most fluid boxing in the sport, the coach is well aware of the mountain that is Makhachev’s grappling-heavy style.

He acknowledged that the “MMA gods” were kind to them during a ten-year run of success, but that luck shifted when they ran into the buzzsaw from Dagestan. Makhachev’s ability in elite wrestling and ever-improving striking has made him a puzzle that few have been able to solve.

The Delusion of Confidence vs. The Reality of Islam Makhachev

Despite Makhachev’s dominant recent performances, Vickers remains a coach who backs his fighter. He admitted that suggesting Jack could beat Islam with the same game plan might make people think he’s “delusional,” yet he maintains that belief. It’s a classic combat sports paradox: acknowledging the supreme greatness of an opponent while simultaneously believing you have the keys to pick the lock.

Islam Makhachev is no longer just Khabib’s successor; he has carved out a legacy that includes wins over pound-for-pound greats like Alexander Volkanovski and Charles Oliveira. For Vickers, the title of GOAT is a reflection of a fighter who represents the absolute pinnacle of human combat.

As Jack Della Maddalena continues his climb toward a title shot, the shadow of Makhachev looms large over the entire sport. Whether or not the two ever meet again, the consensus from the Perth-based camp is clear. Islam Makhachev has set a standard that defines this era of MMA.
