There aren’t many matchups that could put Daniel Cormier in Jon Jones’ corner, and he revealed one of them speaking to Chael Sonnen.
In a world where Cormier and Jones were once a possibility on MMA’s biggest stage either as fighters or coaches, there may still exist a situation that sees Cormier support his long-time rival.
Serving president Donald Trump has sought to embrace the UFC as part of his campaign for another term in office.
Following reports last year regarding White House fights, there are now rumblings of an event next year that could see a UFC event hosted on the White House front lawn to mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Daniel Cormier recently commented on the potential event and said a title fight should be part of the card, but he also expressed the need for an American to be part of the main event – even if that meant supporting Jones.
“(It needs) a bad, bad American that’s gonna win. It pains me to say, if we’ve gotta send one bad American out there to get the job done…call Jon Jones,” DC said on the Good Guy/Bad Guy podcast.
“I would cheer so hard for him! I would cheer so hard for him on the White House. I know you guys always say I’m hard on Jones, if we’ve gotta send one American fighter out to the White House to get a dub, man, send Jon Jones out there.
“I’ll call him to ask him,” Cormier added. “I love Colby (Covington), I love Michael (Chandler)…if we’ve gotta do one American dude, man, you better go put Jon Jones out there to go get us a dub as a country.”
While nothing has been confirmed, it could be a chance for Cormier to get some closure in his rivalry with Jones, supporting his former foe in a unique setting.
While there’s been talk of Jon Jones and Conor McGregor’s title fights against two of the UFC’s active champions, it remains deeply unlikely as time goes by.
But Jones has reportedly been preparing for his return after being out with injury since November 2023, sharing that he’s back in USADA’s testing pool.
But no official date has yet been set for his return.
Instead, Tom Aspinall has become the new face of the heavyweight division, ahead of a title defence against Curtis Blaydes this June, and has emerged as a possible candidate to main event next year’s UFC White House event.
