Even though he has stepped away from the octagon for a while, Ilia Topuria is not letting up on his back-and-forth with Islam Makhachev and his camp.

Dana White recently confirmed that Topuria is taking a break to address some personal issues. In the meantime, an interim lightweight title fight has been set up, but there is already speculation about what he will do next.

The Spaniard has suggested that his return might not involve facing the winner of Justin Gaethje vs Paddy Pimblett, even though that is what many fans expect.

Instead, he remains focused on securing a welterweight title shot against Makhachev, looking to finally settle their long-standing rivalry inside the cage.

Over time, the feud between Topuria and Makhachev has extended beyond just the two fighters, with others from both camps getting pulled into it.

In his most recent comments, ‘El Matador’ took aim at Khabib Nurmagomedov, who now serves as head coach for Makhachev’s camp.

The Spaniard said to Eldo Beran MMA: “I consider my strong point to be on the ground, but lately I’ve accepted that it is not what the public wants to see, although with Islam perhaps it is something that the public wants to see.

“To dominate him standing up, to give him three or four punches in the spot where I have to hit him, and then to submit him in front of Khabib and if he wants to pass, I’ll gladly step on his head too.”

Khabib has mostly stayed clear of direct involvement in their dispute, maintaining the respectful approach that was a hallmark of his fighting days.

‘The Eagle’ still has a strong fanbase. However, some criticism was aimed at his camp recently after one of their fighters received a suspension for testing positive for a prohibited substance.

Backlash grows over Islam Makhachev’s choice of next title challenger

Following his win over Jack Della Maddalena a few months ago, Makhachev faced criticism after expressing interest in Kamaru Usman as his next opponent.

Usman has lost three of his last four fights, with his only recent victory coming against Joaquin Buckley in June.

Makhachev’s decision to target ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ has not gone down well with fans. Many feel the former champion does not deserve another title shot, especially given the number of other contenders available at 170 pounds.
