UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has opened up about his heated confrontation with heavyweight contender Josh Hokit during the chaotic UFC White House press conference, revealing that the situation escalated after Hokit allegedly brought family into the trash talk.
The tense exchange occurred during promotional events for the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 card on the White House lawn, where several fighters, including Alex Pereira, were in attendance. Hokit had already stirred controversy with his aggressive antics and verbal jabs aimed at multiple fighters throughout the event.
According to Topuria, things crossed the line when Hokit made comments involving his mother. Speaking after the incident, the undefeated champion said fighters can criticize each other’s performances or professionalism, but family members should never become targets during promotional exchanges.
Topuria admitted that he instantly lost his temper after hearing the remarks. “You can taunt another fighter’s professionalism, that’s part of it. But talking about someone’s mother? My blood boiled right then,” Topuria said.

Security quickly stepped in before the altercation became physical. Videos from the press conference showed Topuria standing up from his seat while shouting toward Hokit as UFC staff and security rushed between them. Hokit was eventually escorted offstage after the situation spiraled out of control.
Topuria also made it clear that the large security presence inside the venue may have prevented the confrontation from escalating into a physical altercation.
“He was lucky there was so much security there, otherwise one of us two would’ve left that place hurt — and it wouldn’t have been me,” the champion warned. The Georgian-Spanish star emphasized that fighters have a responsibility to set an example for younger fans worldwide.
He explained that trash talk has always been part of combat sports, but dragging family members into public insults sends the wrong message.
Topuria is currently preparing for his lightweight title unification bout against Justin Gaethje at UFC Freedom 250, one of the most anticipated cards of the year.
