Makhachev’s mother has wanted him to quit fighting for a long time. Even when he was younger and winning world titles, she felt he had already done enough. These days, she keeps bringing up Khabib Nurmagomedov, how he walked away at the top because his mother told him to, and never came back.

“But lately, she’s been telling me, ‘I need to see Khabib; we need to talk.’ And I say, ‘What are you going to talk to Khabib about?’ She says, ‘No, I just need to talk to him.’ I haven’t set up the meeting yet, but I already know what she wants to talk about,” Makhachev said.
