Islam Makhachev Reveals Surprising Political Ambitions After Fighting Career

Islam Makhachev is the UFC welterweight champion, a two-division title holder, and one of the most dominant fighters on the planet right now. He is also apparently already thinking about what comes after the fighting. And the answer involves government work in Dagestan. In fighting, some fighters also go into politics. It is not a new thing. From Conor McGregor to Manny Pacquiao, many famous fighters have tried it.

Meanwhile, the Dagestani champion opened up about a potential future in public service. And the role he has in mind is more specific than a generic political ambition. Makhachev isn’t positioning himself for high office or broad policy; he’s looking at construction and urban planning in his home region.

Construction planning and ensuring architectural standards are followed – that’s something I could do. I could stop some of the things that have been done and bring some order,” Makhachev said.

It fits a pattern that keeps emerging from Dagestani fighters at the top level. Khabib invested millions into a training facility in the region. Makhachev is thinking about infrastructure and architectural standards. The fighters who came from Dagestan and reached the highest levels of the sport keep finding ways to point their resources and attention back home.

UFC Champ Islam Makhachev’s Mother Wants Him To Retire

Makhachev’s mother has wanted him to quit fighting for a long time. Even when he was younger and winning world titles, she felt he had already done enough. These days, she keeps bringing up Khabib Nurmagomedov, how he walked away at the top because his mother told him to, and never came back.

But lately, she’s been telling me, ‘I need to see Khabib; we need to talk.’ And I say, ‘What are you going to talk to Khabib about?’ She says, ‘No, I just need to talk to him.’ I haven’t set up the meeting yet, but I already know what she wants to talk about,” Makhachev said.

It will be interesting to see whether Makhachev keeps fighting for many more years or decides to retire soon. But one thing is clear. He has already spoken about what he may do after his fighting career ends. Instead of staying in MMA, he has shown interest in getting involved in politics.
