‘The Eagle’ has likely brought some intensity to Islam Makhachev’s camp.
The former lightweight champion is fast approaching his shot at joining the club of two-division champions on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage at UFC 322.
In the main event at Madison Square Garden, Makhachev will challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight title, having vacated the throne at 155 pounds following his fourth successful defense this past January.
The Dagestani star is already in New York ahead of the November 15 event, training at the Frankie Edgar Iron Army Academy, where the final stages of his camp recently had the addition of an all-time legend.
Khabib Nurmagomedov has only been in New York City for a matter of hours, but he has already been putting Makhachev through his paces in the gym.
After cornering Umar Nurmagomedov to victory at UFC 321, ‘The Eagle’ has turned his attention to Makhachev’s next assignment in the United States.
While his presence in camp is always likely to boost a fighter’s chances of victory, Makhachev recently joked that he had been enjoying life in the gym without his friend and mentor.
“Everything was fine until you arrived two days ago,” Makhachev said with a laugh when asked by Nurmagomedov how his UFC 322 preparation is going (h/t Red Corner MMA).
When told to answer properly, the Dagestani explained the differences between his lightweights camps and his current training.
“How is it not different? More weight,” he said.
“(Training partner Mukhamed) Berkhamov weighs ninety-one kilos. Before, I worked with a guy who weighed eighty-four, eighty-three max.
“Just think, life has changed. I used to always think about where to eat dinner, what to eat. Now, it doesn’t matter. Just need to eat,” Makhachev added.

By the sound of things, one of the Nurmagomedov team’s biggest enemies in MMA has been giving their next opponent tips.
While Makhachev prepares to challenge for the 170-pound title with Khabib’s help, Della Maddalena has been getting tips from Conor McGregor, ‘The Eagle’s’ former opponent and arch-rival.
In a video posted on Instagram by Craig Jones, who has been helping the welterweight champ with his grappling, the BJJ specialist quoted what he alleged were words of encouragement from the Irish star.
“He will be light work at this weight. No finishing capability or positional awareness whatsoever. He is a backpack at best. Nothing to fear. Fear not! Patience, fitness, and ferocity, and he is sparked unconscious inside the 5.”
