Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis takes place on November 14, as we look at how the fight could play out.
Paul enters the fight with a unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Paul’s only loss took place against Tommy Fury. This fight has raised controversy since Tank fights at lightweight, raising questions over the weight. Meanwhile, Davis arrives into the bout with a majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Davis was lucky to avoid a defeat after the referee’s failure to call a 10 -8 round for Roach once Tank took a voluntary knee in round nine.
The most obvious factor in this fight is the massive size difference. Jake Paul, a natural cruiserweight, will likely weigh in at 190 pounds or more, while Gervonta Davis, a lightweight, will have to move up significantly to face him. Paul’s strategy will be to use his size to his advantage, leaning on Davis, clinching, and trying to wear him down. He will likely try to land his powerful right hand, which has knocked out opponents like Nate Robinson and Tyron Woodley.
Conversely, Davis’ game plan will be to rely on his speed, footwork, and devastating counter-punching. A great example of this is his fight against Ryan Garcia. Garcia was the bigger man, but Davis used his superior speed and power to land a perfectly timed body shot that ended the fight.
While Paul has a size advantage, Davis holds a significant edge in skill and experience. Davis is a seasoned professional boxer who has fought multiple world-class opponents, while Paul has fought mostly against former MMA fighters.
Paul, on the other hand, is still learning the nuances of the sport. His defense is still a work in progress, and he often relies on a big looping right hand. He has a lot of heart, but his lack of high-level experience could be his downfall.
“Some people get upset because they think the opposite, that they should probably fight professional fighters. I remember seeing Ali in an exhibition like that against a Japanese fighter a long time ago,” he recalled. I think it will be a good exhibition. But he emphasized that it will be different from the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. I don’t think it’s going to be what we saw between Tyson and Jake Paul. Do you understand? Tyson is already a little older, but I’ve seen Tank train with bigger fighters. So I think it’s going to be a good fight,” Barry Hunter (Davis’ trainer)
