Joe Rogan thinks Conor McGregor’s upcoming comeback at UFC 329 is ‘bananas’.
Just a few weeks ago, UFC boss Dana White finally announced the comeback of Conor McGregor, that will take place at UFC 329 on July 11.
The former UFC double champion is set to take on Max Holloway at 170lbs, in what will mark his first fight in over five years.
And ahead of the spectacle, UFC commentator Joe Rogan is ready for the combat sports world to go wild again for a McGregor fight week.
In the time since the Irishman’s last fight, ‘Blessed’ Holloway has fought eight times, with five of the fights having been title fights.
Commenting on Holloway vs McGregor for the first time, Rogan believes the combat sports world is once again going to go ‘bananas’, as it has historically done for McGregor fights.
The conversation came about during his recent podcast with legendary MMA referee John McCarthy, who recently officiated MVP MMA 1, headlined by Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano.
“Yeah, 17 million people were watching it, that’s huge, it’s all good for everyone. It’s good for the sport, it’s great for the sport, that’s what we need, we need more competition, more eyeballs on it, and unfortunately for the casuals, it has to be a name.
“This Conor McGregor fight in July is gonna be bananas, it’s gonna be bananas. People are gonna go crazy for the return of Conor McGregor because he’s a giant personality.”
McGregor is being widely counted out by the combat sports world, heading into the fight as the biggest underdog he has ever been in throughout his career.
Despite that, one thing that heavily favours McGregor, is the fact that the fight takes place at 170lbs, which will be the first time Holloway has fought at that weight.
However, Rogan believes that could in fact benefit Holloway, as he won’t have to worry about cutting any weight for the high-profile clash.
“How could we (expect the same McGregor), he hasn’t fought in five years. Five f—— years ago. The thing is about Max Holloway, is that he isn’t that much younger than Conor, but Max has been in constant high level competition the entire time.
“He won the BMF title, beat Dustin (Poirier), constant high level competition, it’s a different thing. This is 170lbs, which is even better, no weight cutting at all. And also, knowing this is such a high profile fight, he’s going to be in f—— insane shape,” Rogan continued.
When Holloway was in talks with the promotion to fight McGregor, he stated that he would fight the Irishman at any weight as long as it got him the fight.
