Conor McGregor was once considered by many to be the pound-for-pound greatest fighter in the world, so where did it all go wrong?
Not only was 'The Notorious' one of the best showmen combat sports had ever seen, but he also knew how to back up his talk inside the octagon. It took him just 13 seconds to unify the featherweight title against Jose Aldo before later becoming the first-ever simultaneous two-division champion with a flawless performance at UFC 205.
Since then, Conor McGregor's career has been on a downward spiral, and Joe Rogan is blaming the Irishman's self-destructive nature for this.
"Conor self-destructed in a lot of ways because of money," Rogan said during a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience.
"He took that fight with Floyd Mayweather, made a ton of money off that, and then took a long time before he came back to MMA—and he's just not been the same guy since."
"I think that's just money, it's a lot of partying, but it's the same kind of thing. It's just wild. But when Conor was in his prime, he was a f---ing assassin."
Even with his controversy outside of the cage, McGregor will forever be considered one of the biggest factors in the growth of modern mixed martial arts.
Despite that, Rogan believes Jon Jones showed how to remain the best fighter in the world while also going through worrying matters outside of competition.
"There's people that are just different," Rogan stated. "They're wired different and they are uncommon amongst uncommon men."
"They rise to the top of the top and they just dominate—and that's Jon [Jones], he's just the greatest of all time. He's 37 years old and he's still the greatest. That's crazy."
"Jon [Jones] is a special dude, when he's gone, we're all going to miss him. He's a different kind of guy. I mean, he's been at the top for 14 f---ing years..."
"Never ducked anybody fought all the best, destroyed everybody, and dominated his division—went up to heavyweight, dominates at heavyweight [despite the controversies]."
