Joe Rogan has long gushed over former two-weight UFC champion Alex Pereira, and has now made a huge assessment of the Brazilian’s sheer talent.
Returning to the Octagon next month, former light heavyweight titleholder Alex Pereira will headline UFC 320, taking on Magomed Ankalaev in the pair’s bad-blooded rematch.
And long maintaining Pereira would run roughshod in the Octagon before his move materialized, Rogan has been front and center for the majority of the Sao Paulo native’s outings in the UFC.
Ahead of his return, Rogan has heaped praise on the sheer ability of the former middleweight kingpin, too.
Forced the distance just thrice during his Octagon run, decorated knockout artist Pereira has turned in notable victories via stoppage against the likes of Sean Strickland, Israel Adesanya , Jiri Prochazka, Jamahal Hill and Khalil Rountree.
And before that, Pereira took out the who’s who of the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions during his time with GLORY Kickboxing.
Dumbfounded by Pereira’s power in both hands, Rogan claimed the Brazilian star was likely the rarest of breeds when it comes to that attribute.
“(Alex) Pereira is a different thing, man,” Rogan said on his UFC Paris Fight Companion. “He’s like a one in a million guy. The power this guy has is one in a million — it’s nuts.
“He’s built different,” Rogan continued. “He’s built like a f—— alien, man. He is like a legitimate Amazon warrior. Like, absolute legit Amazon warrior. His family comes from an Amazonian tribe. The power that this guy has.”
But for all his knockout power, Pereira seems to be taking a rather altered approach to training camp ahead of his hostile rematch with Russian rival Ankalaev.
Tasked with defending a wrestling onslaught from Ankalaev in their first title affair earlier this year, Pereira stuffed an impressive 12 separate takedown attempts by the challenger.
And even shooting once himself in an unsuccessful attempt to put Ankalaev on the seat of his pants on the canvas, Pereira would suffer a close unanimous decision loss over the course of five rounds.
Hopeful of mitigating that wrestling approach again next month in Las Vegas, Pereira explained his grappling-heavy focus to this fight camp ahead of UFC 320.
“(I am) training the same as always,” Pereira told Ariel Helwani.
“A lot of wrestling in our training. That is what’s building (me) to be what (I) am in the UFC. Glover’s style of wrestling.
“Some people talk too much. ‘Oh, he’s showing too much!’ Bro, (I) am just showing things that are not gonna affect (me) in the fight.
“(I’m) always focused on the wrestling for the MMA training, not only the striking.”
