Islam Makhachev achieved his goal of becoming champion in two divisions. With his heavy wrestling, he had won crucial matchups, as fans saw him dominate with wrestling against Jack Della Maddalena during the welterweight championship fight. Talking about his style, Joe Rogan praised Makhachev, saying he was not just a wrestler.

Rogan praised Islam Makhachev for evolving into a dangerous knockout threat in addition to his dominant grappling. The UFC commentator explained how brutally the Dagestani fighter had knocked out Alexander Volkanovski. During a recent video, the 58-year-old said (video here; warning: viewer discretion advised):

“Islam, he smothers everybody. His striking is dangerous as f---. He’s so terrifying once he gets hold of you. He head-kicked Volkanovski. He f---s people up standing up.”

Meanwhile, the welterweight champion is planning to defend his title in August, and his opponent is most probably going to be Ian Garry. However, nothing had been confirmed yet, and fans had to wait for official confirmation, as Michael Morales and Carlos Prates were also in line.

Carlos Prates Says Islam Makhachev’s Wrestling Won’t Be Effective Against Him

Carlos Prates continued to push for a fight against Islam Makhachev as the UFC is looking for the welterweight champion’s next opponent. With names like Ian Garry and Michael Morales also in the mix, Prates believed that Makhachev might have been considering him an easy matchup due to his weak takedown defense. But during a recent interview with Daniel Cormier, he said:

“He [Islam] thinks I’m an easier fight than Ian Garry… Maybe because Ian beat me. Like I said, Leon Edwards took me down, JDM took me down, and Ian Garry took me down one time too. So let’s see if he can take me down and stop me from getting back up.”

Despite being taken down by fighters like Leon Edwards, Jack Della Maddalena, and Garry in previous fights, “The Nightmare” insisted he was never worried by the grappling exchanges because he trusted his ability to get back to his feet. Meanwhile, fans were waiting for the UFC to announce the next title challenger.
