Jon Jones: I’m Actively Training 5 Days A Week

Jon Jones isn’t finished just yet. The former two-division UFC champion made a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Elmont, N.Y., on Sunday and clarified his status just months after shocking fans with a retirement announcement.

“I am not retired,” Jones said in a video clip posted online by a PR rep. “I’m actively training five days a week and I’m in the UFC’s drug-testing pool.”

Jones, 38, has already been tested three times in 2025, according to the UFC’s official anti-doping website. Notably, one of those tests came after his supposed retirement in June, suggesting he never fully walked away from competition.

Jones’ renewed fire comes directly from the buzz surrounding UFC White House 2026. The once-in-a-lifetime July 4th card being planned for the South Lawn to mark America’s 250th birthday. When Jones heard about the event, he immediately set his sights on fighting there.

“I don’t really know,” Jones said when asked about his status for the card. “It’s kind of out of my control right now. I’m training for the event, I’ll be ready for the event, that’s my goal, that’s my intention, but ultimately it’s up to the boss.”

Until Further Notice

That “boss,” UFC CEO Dana White, isn’t convinced. White has said publicly that Jones’ history of failed drug tests, arrests, and out-of-cage controversies makes him a “billion-to-one” shot to appear at the White House event.

It’s a stark reminder of the uneasy relationship between Jones’ undeniable talent and his volatile personal history.

Despite White’s skepticism, Jones appears to be taking his comeback seriously. Training daily, staying compliant in the testing pool, and making himself available for matchmaking, he’s leaving the door open if not pushing it wide open. For a fighter long regarded as one of the most gifted athletes in UFC history, the question remains: will his next chapter be one of redemption or another what-could-have-been?
