Jon Jones is said to have accepted a rematch with Khamzat Chimaev after the middleweight champion took him down during an impromptu street grappling session.
The former UFC heavyweight and light-heavyweight champion, Jones, recently purchased a property in Grozny, Russia.
Spending some time there with friends, he crossed paths with Chimaev, who also happened to be there for the evening.
The two took photos with fans and hung out before deciding to test their grappling skills against each other. Footage from the encounter appeared to show ‘Borz’ scoring a takedown, leaving Jones looking a bit embarrassed.
Footage of ‘Bones’ wrestling with Chimaev quickly made its way around social media. The two were dressed for the cold Russian weather, but still found time for a quick roll.
Amateur photographer Rizvan Edilsultanov captured the moment, showing the Chechen getting the better of Jones. Afterwards, the GOAT contender was heard jokingly running away, repeatedly saying “no,” and asking onlookers not to record.
Following his middleweight title win over Dricus Du Plessis, there has been an ongoing meme among fans suggesting that grappling is all Chimaev brings to the table.
There are also some who think he struggles to pick up on social cues. One fan commented: “Chimaev doing too much like usual, it seems he often has a hard time reading social situations.”
Edilsultanov, the man who originally posted the video, claimed that Jones was dissatisfied with the interaction. According to him, ‘Bones’ agreed to a fight after another individual present offered money for a match between the two.
“Khamzat Chimaev and Jon Jones tested each other’s skills. Chimaev slightly surpassed [Jones]. Jones couldn’t settle with ‘defeat’, he began to shout at the whole terrible ‘no, no’.
“But then Alfredo Auditore entered the case, offering for a fight (who can say how much?) to which Jones immediately replied with agreement. Well, what are we waiting for this confrontation?”
