Justin Gaethje does not want to be another legendary name on Ilia Topuria’s list of UFC victims.
‘The Highlight’ is the latest to be tasked with trying to become the first man to beat ‘El Matador’ in professional MMA.
When Gaethje challenges Topuria at the White House on June 14, he will attempt to blemish the Spaniard’s perfect 17-0 record and finally achieve undisputed status at 155 pounds.
Beating Topuria is a feat that some big names have failed to accomplish so far, but Gaethje thinks he knows how to do what they couldn’t…
Joe Rogan thinks Topuria’s résumé will be unrivaled if he can add Gaethje’s name to his legendary run inside the Octagon.
Many are expecting the Spaniard to do just that — and in the same kind of violent way that he dispatched Volkanovski, Holloway, and Oliveira in consecutive outings.
But Gaethje is confident that he and his team can figure out how to stop that from happening. And he recently detailed some of the strategies he’ll employ to avoid the champ’s KO punches.
“I’ve really got to be careful,” Gaethje said during an interview with Grind City Media.
“He’s shorter than me, and you really don’t want your head to be too much higher than guys who are throwing missiles at you.
“Positioning is going to be the biggest factor in this fight,” he continued. “I have to be very stubborn with my position, control the space, control his feet, and really be diligent in my defense.
“I have to constantly be winning the angle battle and the distance battle.”
Gaethje has previously fallen short against Oliveira and Khabib Nurmagomedov in fights for the undisputed lightweight title.
The two-time interim champ is likely approaching his very last chance to secure that accolade before hanging up his MMA gloves for good.
But in Topuria, ‘The Highlight’ could not have been given a tougher assignment for his third shot.
