Khalil Rountree wanted to leave no doubt in Jamahal Hill’s head that he was the superior fighter between the two fighters. He definitely accomplished that. As he was able to score multiple takedowns while causing some real damage on Hill’s and leg with some very effective kicks as Rountree coasted to an easier than expected victory in the main event for UFC Baku.

The judges ultimately scored the fight 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45. Rountree looked fantastic and showed that he deserves consideration for another title shot. Alex Pereira might just get the nod ahead of Rountree since he owns a win over Rountree. Former champion Hill drops his third match in a row after and is probably out of title contention at this point.

Hill started limping across the octagon thanks to Khalil Rountree strong kicks to the legs. Despite the damage Hill still tried to press forward. But clearly with his mobility being effected, the power from his punches where clearly effected. Rountree noticed that he had a weaken opponent and then proceeded on with a balanced attack. Rountree didn’t stop Hill but he was able to score multiple take downs and had no problem landing his punches at will.

Championship mindset

Khalil Rountree seemed to learn from his loss against Pereira. He was able to revaluate his mistakes from that fight and be able to make adjustments. Watching the efficiency of his attack you can see the growth that he made. He clearly used those lessons against a dangerous former champion.

“I told you from the beginning, I didn’t come in here underestimating Jamahal,” Rountree during the post fight interview. “The plan was to be smart. I made some mistakes in the Alex fight. This one, I get to make different decisions. I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do and if I’m winning the round, I can secure that and be a smart, professional championship level fighter. That’s how champions think, in my opinion.”
