Islam Makhachev has now done what Khamzat Chimaev is hoping to achieve.
During the main event of Saturday’s UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden, the UFC crowned their 11th double champion.
Makhachev added the welterweight title to his collection, controlling Jack Della Maddalena from start to finish, and moving up a weight class did not seem to slow him down at all.
It was a statement win, and the Dagestani quickly looked right at home in his new division. Della Maddalena had no answers in his first title defence.
Makhachev earned plenty of respect for the performance, and Chimaev was one of those who took notice.
The former 155-pound king’s shot at two-division supremacy drew quick reactions from fans, fighters, and analysts alike after the UFC 322 main event.
‘JDM’ faced criticism for his lacklustre showing, while Makhachev also took heat in some circles. Ilia Topuria even called it “boring” on social media.
While Topuria had strong opinions about the match-up, Khamzat Chimaev struck a different tone, choosing instead to congratulate all of Dagestan after UFC 322.
On X, he kept it simple: “Congratulations Dagestan.”
Congratulations Dagestan

At UFC 322, Makhachev became the 11th fighter to win titles in two different weight classes, but no one has claimed belts in three divisions.
Some have suggested the 34-year-old could be the first to do it. But the Dagestani seems content to stop at welterweight.
Unlike his rival Ilia Topuria, Makhachev is not aiming for a third title.
“I dream of becoming and remaining a double champion, of going down in history as someone who has won two belts,” he told Match TV (h/t @ChampRDS via X).
“(A third belt)? I can’t eat that much anymore.”
