Bobby Green wanted referee Herb Dean to let the fight continue at UFC 332, even as he was dropped three times in quick succession.
The lightweight veteran fell to Esteban Ribovics on Saturday at Delta Center in Salt Lake City when Dean intervened after Ribovics found his range and floored Green repeatedly. Green, who remained conscious throughout, protested the stoppage immediately.
Speaking afterward while celebrating with Quinton Jackson, who cornered him that night, Green said he had told Dean before the opening bell to let him go out on his shield if things turned bad. Jackson defended the referee's decision, explaining Dean was trying to protect Green from unnecessary punishment. Green acknowledged the referee's concern but said he wanted more time to fight back.
The stoppage snapped a four-fight winning streak for the 40-year-old Green, who drops to 36-18-1. Ribovics moved to 17-3 with his second consecutive knockout after finishing Edson Barboza in August.
Green and Ribovics are expected to receive their show and win money this week, per standard UFC payout schedules.
