Louie Sutherland explains how Tai Tuivasa UFC Perth fight came around on just days’ notice

Louie Sutherland accepted a make or break fight with Tai Tuivasa and flew across the world on just seven days’ notice.

The British heavyweight has had a disastrous start to his UFC career, losing his first two fights by knockout and submission to Brando Peričić and Valter Walker respectively. And he is now set for what is – on paper – the toughest test yet against former top five contender Tuivasa at UFC Perth.

However, both men are likely fighting for their promotional careers as the popular Australian looks to snap a four-year, six-fight losing streak. Tuivasa and Sutherland are known for their striking and the excitement of their fights, so this one is expected to be ‘can’t miss’.

Louie Sutherland details the circumstances behind UFC Perth call

After his latest loss to Tallison Teixeira back in February in Melbourne, Tai Tuivasa was signed up to face Sean Sharaf in a last chance bout. However, when his rival pulled out less than 10 days before showtime, Louie Sutherland answered the call to replace him.

The gigantic former rugby star told the UFC social channels: “My manager called me late at night and I was like ‘what the hell is going on?’ He was like ‘we’ve got something for you, but it’s in Perth’. I was like ‘s—, I’ve got to travel all the way to Perth.”

Sutherland is actually a fan of Tuivasa’s, sharing a similar jovial style outside of the cage and a hard-hitting one inside it. “You can see why the fans like him, he drinks out of a shoe,” the Brit joked. I’ve had my eye on Tai for a couple of years.

“I think he’s a cracking guy, he’s funny, he knocks people out. I’m expecting loud boos and a potential beer to be thrown at me. But I encourage that.

“I don’t care about the hostility. I’ve fought in France against a Frenchman before and it was quite hostile. I expect something similar this time around, so bring it on!”
